History of Alibaug

 Alibaug is a littoral town in the district of Raigad and is surrounded by the vast Arabian Sea. Being surrounded by sea on the three sides, Alibaug is widely known as the "Goa of Maharashtra ''. The naval chief Kanhoji Angre while the supremacy of Shivaji Maharaj founded the town Alibaug in the 17th century. Previously this town was named as Kolaba which was situated in Maharashtra's Konkan area. This is associated with the fort named Kolaba which was created in 1680 CE by Shivaji Maharaj. The town is surrounded by villages which are notable frontiers of Bene Israeli Jews. Alibaug has a chapel in the locale of " Israel Ali '' which means Israel Lane in the native language of Maharashtra. Ali, a Bene Israelite who was a rich man and had several coconut and mango plantations, lived in Israel Ali. And that is the reason why that area is widely known as "Alichi Bagh '' or "Alibaug" that means Ali's Garden in the Marathi language.
